I’m probably gonna nuke this page entirely in the interest of keeping things simple. While I’d love to have a page that simply lists every last post that’s ever appeared here, that’s beyond my current skill level. I’d have the AI give it a shot, and probably still will, but I’m hesitant after seeing what it did with the original design.
It was okay in some ways but it made too many assumptions and acted on them in a way only dumb people would find acceptable. It knew it was sort of a blues related thing so every page had references to smoky bars late at night, with stock photos of weathered guitars lying on pool tables, etc. Lowest common denominator type shit.
All I’ll say for now is that if AI becomes the norm it’ll be a great thing for artists and smart people, who will be in high demand. See, AI can’t do what humans really do, the talented ones at least. All AI can do is give you an average of what millions of others did or would do under the same circumstances. It can never have an original thought, therefore it can’t make art, not really. As we slide chaotically into the AI age art in all forms will be recognized at last as one of the few things that makes life worth living. A fine arts degree will be the new PhD, freeing up those weirdos for something less useless. Things will be a lot more fun when that happens!
Maybe we can figure a way to make MBAs illegal too, though that may take care of itself once we round up the morbidly rich and put them on French Guiana’s Devil’s Island, as seen in the 70s classic film “Papillon”, with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. I was obsessed with that movie (and book!) at the time. It’s got boobs! Pretty rare in a PG in those days, but they were supposed to be indigenous people, who never matter even now to the censor types, who tend to be dicks/right wing morons.
Eesh… A simple “this page is going away soon” and I start screaming at clouds! I need a vacation…
Enjoy the photo for a little bit longer as I look into ways to have AI work exactly the way I want it to, which will result in that index of posts page I alluded to. That’s what this Archives page is supposed to be! I’ll figure it out if I have to remember raw html coding. I used to do that in the early 90s!
Fun side story, barely believable but true: In 1991-2 we bought our first PC, a Tandy 486 SX with 4MB RAM and maybe 100MB of hard drive space, nothing but a floppy drive, pre CD-ROM even. It was $999! The internet was so tiny that a little Homer Simpson tribute page I quickly threw together, with tiny sound clips and not much else, was recognized as a BBC Site of the Day or something. I felt like a rock star!
Add-on tidbit: I worked at the time at a place that made computer training manuals for all the hot business software (not “apps” yet!). One of the head creative nerds in ’91 was all fired up after having just spent a week researching the internet by using it in his spare time and at home, not easy back then. He knew right away what it meant, how it was the wheel of the post-petroleum era… The public stayed with AOL for another decade…
But that AI-designed archive page with all posts in order by date? It’s coming! Keep your shirt on, Curly! I’ll get to it some time…
