Okay, you can linger for a minute and absorb the perfectly lit visage of the beautiful Alice Faye, once the number one box office moneymaker on the planet. It’s true! My favorite of her films would be “The Gang’s All Here”, a surreal musical, with monkeys and every banana they could find, real or from the props department. Do yourself a favor and watch that while high. You’ll thank me hard!
Then they screwed her over on her last movie and she just said fuck it and quit, having already married Jack Benny’s derelict bandleader, Phil Harris, and welcomed two lovely daughters. She was apparently super rich too, at least as portrayed on the Harris/Faye radio show, possibly the single funniest program in radio history, USA division.
I’ll do/already did a post on that show, probably a few actually. I used it as background sound for years after having done it with Fibber McGee and Molly prior to that, replacing sports talk radio permanently. The only ads are too old to be annoying or otherwise mind-altering like ads today need to be. Did that for like 5 years, literally. Only when music became important again recently did I finally stop, though I’ll still play a few from time to time.
That show’s real star wasn’t either of the two big names. No, it was the very unique Walter Tetley, also the voice of Sherman from Sherman and Peabody cartoons, playing the role of Julius Abruzzio, the grocery boy with a combative attitude who’s constantly being abused, nearly to death at times, by Phil and his sidekick Frankie Remly, later called Elliott Lewis. I’ll explain all that at length, believe you me!
