Hello again music lovers! It’s another tune that might be a surprise to those who know me as a blues/jazz/old R&B guy. I don’t typically listen to or even get exposed to very much current pop music, but every so often something or someone will appear on my radar and demand attention. In 2009, maybe later, I heard the Lady Gaga hits and liked them right away. “Paparazzi” was/is probably my favorite, but there’s something to like about all of ’em.
This tune in particular stood out for me when I got the album and heard the other songs. I guess it was a single but I’d never heard it on radio or piped in as workplace background music. I loved it immediately! As a shiny little melodic jewel it tickles the key neurons that make life more fun, less harrowing. It may do that for you too if you can hear it as music, setting aside preconceived notions about people that get as much mass attention as LG does. Let it do its work and you’ll be happier after. Or not. It’s all subjective and informed mostly by what we liked as our brains were first building themselves, so before age 14-15 for the most part. You can fine tune your taste after that, even change lanes completely, but that early shit’s set in stone, or flesh, or brain goo. I ain’t no scientist! Look it up if you care so much!
The list of non-ancient artists that I’ve discovered over the years is still pretty limited, and mostly female. That’s made me wonder why that is, and I think I have part of it figured out. The ones that are songwriters (Lake Street Dive, Shawn Colvin, Madison Cunningham, KT Tunstall, LG, Brandi Carlile, Sierra Hull, etc.) have different and more interesting things to say, with deeper connection to the world and with people in general. There’s a great Lake Street Dive song called “Being a Woman” that illustrates this nicely. Go listen to it when you’re though here. Then come back and maybe participate! Tell me something! I’m bored and love music! We can build from there…
To stray off topic, this place has yet to take off, to put it mildly. A day or two ago there were literally ZERO visitors to any one of the dozens of pages and posts that are here. I’m not here to get famous or anything but it doesn’t feel good to be this much of a repellent to the general populace. Help me feel better by leaving a comment or maybe liking something, but be honest with it. No liking unless you really mean it!
I’ll cut it right there, having nothing more to say. That rarely stops me, so you’re welcome! I aim to please, and so does Louise. I don’t know any Louises yet actually, I just like rhymes. I think that one came from the Firesign Theater, as formative an influence on me as anything. I may have the most complete FT collection ever assembled! Yes, I have all the Dear Friends vinyl. That shit was improv and podcasting all in one, and 30+ years ahead of its time to boot! Monty Python, the Goons, and the Firesign Theater albums were the future, which is now here, or was. There it is over there! Quick! Before it falls over!
See? There’s always something else to say! Hence this place’s existence in the first place. And the one before. I have thoughts! They need to be unleashed! Mental constipation is no picnic buddy boy! Ex Lax won’t cut it, nor Metamucil. Even healthy eating doesn’t help, which is why I almost never do that. My vegetable intake is 100% sub toppings and soup ingredients. Fruits? Yeah right! Maybe a banana if I’m being forced to eat a fruit item, or a nice ripe apricot. We had an apricot tree in the yard when I was a tot and didn’t know better yet, so I developed an early love for that specific flavor. IHOP has an amazing apricot syrup, or did. That would of course be my preferred means of apricot ingestion.
Until next time, adieu and many happy returns of the day, whatever that means. You only ever see that used in Peanuts comics in my experience. What say you? Talk! If you want… You do you… Lurking is cool too…
Here’s the featured attraction, hilariously coiffed. Flock of Seagulls would be proud!
