Arnett Cobb – Shebna (1946) Bonus: Unexpected Comic Book Ranting!

I haven’t been doing the song a day thing as regularly as I should, so I thought of this one, which I first heard a few weeks ago. I liked the use of a bit of dissonance in the main theme. It almost sounds like the 60s Batman TV show horn stabs! I loved that show so much! It was on two consecutive nights as I recall, which seems very weird, but I watched ’em all, have ’em on a drive somewhere. It’s the only Batman I can get with. Generations of adults walking among us seem to think Batman is real or something. The Joker is a more fleshed out character than anyone you know in real life, and that can’t possibly be a good thing. He’s a role model! He! It’s not real! “He” is a commercial property! Used to extract billions from us! The lowly consumer. They laugh at us as they scoop up our dollars, now digitally so as to not cause a scene!

I’ll never get comic book movies or people. It’s a problem, because they’re multiplying fast! Seems like only yesterday that one could leave the house without being so regularly assaulted by the barrage of comic book stuff on people’s clothing, on the food or drinks they’re eating rudely or in the air as sound waves instructing you where and when to go for your next fix of comic book inspired entertainment. And don’t forget the garish posters and billboards, with multicolored entities doing harm to other multicolored entities we’re asked to see as bad, so we like the first entities, not the bad ones! Isn’t it a lot like pro wrestling? Don’t people outgrow that any more? They used to. Yep.

The tune! I’m with it now! I revel in any chance to disparage comic books as they are in the culture now, embedded in everything, always taking a cut, wanting a few of your dollars too. Nobody can be spared! We must all embrace this! It’s story telling! Look at the intricate plot lines and the character development! It’s like that guy Shakey Spear, is it not?!?

These are the arguments of unserious people, whose lives are bereft of real art and culture and hence the joy that those thing can bring. Equating green guys in tights with King Lear is insulting to everyone, I don’t care how popular these things are, that don’t make it good, or art! That makes it a billionaire’s wet dream! See, now their creatives don’t have to do as much creating! Just pick up a comic, choose a color scheme for the tights, and rake in the profits!

Crap. Well, I’ll leave the song here anyway and change the title so nobody’s surprised by the rant. I bet our 1/10th of a regular reader is a comic book guy or gal or microbe too. You can’t escape ’em. Outwitting ’em is easy though, so there’s that at least. Probably little danger of them achieving levels of intellect that might endanger anyone. And who knows? Maybe this whole mega-superhero-blow-everything-up aesthetic will run its course and we’ll be on to the next stupid thing. I’d love to see what someone could do with a remake of My Mother the Car for instance. It would be a step up! Or the Munsters! They were sorta green, right? Herman was, maybe the kid too! There’s your next dynamic duo! Herman and the kid – was it Billy Mumy? – in lots of neon green, maybe some shades. It’ll work! Wake up the creatives!

Here’s the tune… Man, one little Batman mention and I go fucking apeshit! What’s wrong with me? No need to start commenting now! Wouldn’t that be fun? The first real, organic comment comes from someone mortally offended by my superhero shade. I just said shade! Fuck!!! I’m becoming one of them!

Enjoy… I’ll be taking a long hot bath… and a few tylenols… I wonder if that Nyquil is still good?
